Mark Ellis founded MSO to resolve a critical friction point in international education: the gap between high-achieving global ambition and the subtle, rigorous expectations of the British elite system. With a BA and MA in Mathematics and an MSc in Psychodynamic Practice, both from Oxford University, Mark brings a rare dual-perspective to educational consultancy. He combines the analytical precision of a mathematician with a sophisticated psychological understanding of student development. This "dual-lens" approach allows MSO to look beyond surface-level tutoring, addressing the underlying confidence and cultural transitions that are often the true barriers to elite success.
As a current Oxford University Lecturer and a lead commentator for the London Business Journal, Mark provides families with a strategic advantage. His high-level insights into shifting entrance trends allow MSO families to adapt their academic roadmaps long before these shifts become common knowledge. Fluent in Mandarin (HSK6) and having lived in China for five years, Mark acts as a dedicated strategic partner on the ground in the UK, ensuring international ambition is met with the precise British academic pedigree required to thrive.
Academic Pedigree: BA & MA (Mathematics), Oxford University | MSc (Psychodynamic Practice), Oxford University. Professional Authority: Current Oxford University Lecturer & Teacher Trainer. Specialist Credentials: Trinity CertTESOL (Distinction) | Cambridge DELTA | HSK6 (Mandarin).
We operate with a dual-lens mastery of the educational landscape. With 15 years in international education—including five years living and working in China—the Founder possesses a deep, lived understanding of international family priorities.
This is paired with an insider’s command of the UK private system gained through years of direct institutional experience. As a national commentator on British educational trends, with insights featured in the London Business Journal, the Founder ensures our families stay ahead of shifting global and institutional shifts before they become common knowledge.

Mark's school has been helping my two daughters prepare for the Common Entry exams since 2025. I especially want to mention Qasim, their physics teacher at Mark's school, who is incredibly patient. Since my daughters attend boarding school, they took a mock test before the April holiday and received a B. During the April spring break, they worked through past papers to identify their weaknesses in the relevant topics, and Qasim then provided clarification. In those three weeks, they significantly improved their understanding of previously unclear material.
Finally, in early June, they achieved an A, very close to an A*. Therefore, I asked Qasim to continue tutoring my younger son in Physics for the CE exams, primarily by regularly testing his weaknesses and explaining anything he didn't understand. We will continue this model for our two daughters' GCSEs, encouraging them to study independently and solve problems on their own at school. Before holidays, Qasim will provide practice questions on the topics they've already studied, ranging from easy to difficult, which they submit to their teacher before class. Qasim will then grade these questions and identify their weaknesses for further explanation.
I'm also very grateful to Mark from Mark School, because he was the first person to communicate with me, understand my child's needs, and then match me with a suitable teacher. Teacher Mark speaks excellent Chinese, so even though I don't speak English, I had no communication problems with him.
